• The FXPB Billing Application has evolved over the past 12 years to its present implementation.
• Originally, the entire database/application was based on Microsoft Access. All forms, reports, trade data and logic was contained within a single MDB file. As use of the application grew, the number of clients increased, and trade volumes grew, Access became a hindrance. The application/data needed to be accessible globally, yet running Access across the WAN was impossible. Interim workarounds included annually purging trade data, making a copy of the 2GB MDB file in each of the regions – which meant a nightly copy process of the (zipped) files. Again, this was all a hindrance.
• The major upgrade to billing took place about 3 years ago when we split the trade data out of the MDB and moved it to a datacenter/managed Oracle server. This brought the MDB down to its current size of under 10MB, and all trade data resides in Oracle now. A copy of the MDB, which contains the forms, reports, and some logic now resides in each region, rarely gets updated, and is simply used as a front-end to the Oracle database.
