2. Who is the target market for PDM?

PDM offers services tailored to meet the needs of small-to-medium size independent software vendors (ISVs) who are working on developing a new product, expanding functionality, or customizing existing products. This is a growing market because ISVs, who need to focus on core strengths, are looking to outsource non-core development.  Increasingly, venture-backed software companies are required by their investors to have a sound outsourcing strategy.

And industry studies predict shifts in IT offshoring from low level services and finding efficiencies to the top of the pyramid – product development. These shifts will signify moves from the captive centers set by some software companies to third-party provider units that are operational from the first day.

We know ISVs will be interested in PDM because we have received numerous requests from ISVS for this type of service or with very special product development requirements.

3. Why would ISVs be interested in PDM?
LUXOFT PDM service provides the following capabilities that can easily translate into the business value allowing the customers to start a more effective production:
  • Flexibility in choice of a variety of development methodologies, including Luxoft Agile Process (LAP) that is designed specifically for distributed PDM.
  • Efficient communication and linguistic skills (90% English fluency) of our personnel.
  • Efficient and highly disciplined development teams expertly selected to work productively in the product development environment.
  • Excellent software development experience, leverage of tools/reusable components libraries, use of proprietary best practices and taking advantage of Luxoft quality standards in software development.
  • Centers of Expertise, providing efficient knowledge management services.
  • Proven and flexible Luxoft Client Engagement frameworks, which provide for smooth and risk-free outsourcing experience.

4. What benefits does PDM offer its customers?
As a specific suite of services for ISVs looking for a partner to co-develop software products and components, PDM’s customer benefits include:
  • Reduced production costs.
  • Improved productivity, leveraging economies of scale and scope, better flexibility, and accelerating core product time-to-market.
  • Ability to scale potential for growth.
  • Access to specific skills, know-how and additional services.

5. How does LUXOFT differentiate itself from the rest of its competition when it comes to Product Development?
LUXOFT PDM service offers an array of unique capabilities that may translate to clients values, such as:

  • A free choice of the development methodologies and their combinations, including Luxoft Agile Process designed specifically to address distributed product development.
  • Customized client engagement framework targeting potential risks of the distributed product development.
  • Proprietary PDM-tailored team selection methodology.

Clients also benefit from the advantages offered by both layers of competition: on the one hand, Luxoft customers enjoy all advantages of working with a top-tier vendor: mature processes, access to the best talent, low personnel attrition, financial stability, IP protection, short lead time to start a project. On the other hand, small and mid-size ISVs get the management focus typically available only to large corporate clients.
6. What development methodologies do you utilize?

Luxoft is capable of using any traditional methodology according to the client requirements, however normally core of the Luxoft PDM is a flexible process framework, the Luxoft Agile Process (LAP), which combines the advantages of accepted agile software development methodologies, such as Scrum, SP, Evo and RUP. Agile software development focuses on keeping code simple, testing often, and delivering functional bits of the application as soon as they are ready. The goal of ASD is to build upon small client-approved segments as the project progresses rather than delivering one large application at the end of the project.

Agile Development allows the customer the ability to alter the application functionality and add new features based on feedback from key customers, market research data, and the competitive landscape.  Revisions occur often.  The traditional well-structured development plan that calls for highly documented business requirements and long intervals between product releases is no longer part of an accelerated time-to-market release plan.

Another important LAP feature is the focus on distributed development.   There is widespread belief that agile methodologies are not a good fit for offshore outsourcing.  The concern is that agile software development methodologies require very close interaction with the end user, product managers, business executives and project team.  Contrary to these beliefs, many agile techniques can be effectively applied in the distributed environment.  For example, LAP uses daily teleconference “Scrum” meetings for communication and progress tracking.  These frequent meetings serve to make everyone part of the team.  These meetings also make everyone’s work visible to the rest of the team.  There are no surprises because everyone is involved at each stage.

7. Do you have a process that enables you to develop expertise on our products? How long can this take?
Luxoft has a proven methodology for knowledge transfer and management. It is based on three basic means: document-oriented, training and oral communication (meetings, discussions, interviews). Information flow is spread on the following streams: a) TO Luxoft, based on requirements gathering and analysis processes; b) INSIDE Luxoft, based on Core Team development, regular communication and rotation; c) FROM Luxoft, based on project deliverables. Initial knowledge transfer on client’s processes (by Client Engagement Team) takes approx. 2-3 months; on domain expertise (by Core Team) – 6-9 months.
