On Thursday 19th May over 100 Excelian and Luxoft staff made their way to Docklands Sailing & Watersports Centre (DSWC) for a fun evening of dragon boat racing, all in aid of raising money for DSWC.
The event was a great success and raised over £5,000 for DEBRA. DEBRA provides support for individuals with Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB), a rare genetic skin condition that causes the skin to blister and tear at the slightest touch. The charity focuses on funding research towards the effective treatments and ultimately, a cure for EB, and supports those living with the condition by providing emotional and practical support. In addition, £2160 was raised for DSWC, a local charity that gives local children and adults who may be vulnerable or low of income the chance to experience watersports.
Dragon boat racing is a historic Chinese tradition where boats of ten to twelve paddlers plus a drummer at the front of the boat, and a helm steering at the rear, battle it out head to head over a 250-meter course.
After two qualifying races for each of the eight teams, the finals were fought out between Excelian’s Boaty McBoatface (AKA sales, marketing and staffing), Boaty McDragonface (AKA Technical Consulting) and the Luxoft ‘Cossacks’ team. After a very close first 100m it was the Cossacks who pulled away and eventually rampaged home by three clear lengths, displaying a fine example of strength, team work and determination. Prize giving followed as well as BBQ, drinks and cheesy disco put the finishing touches on a great Thursday evening down by the water!
Ben Merrett, CEO of DEBRA, who was also taking part, commented, “On behalf of DEBRA, I would like to thank Excelian and Luxoft for taking part in another great fundraising event for our charity. It was great to see everyone having such a fun evening whilst also raising a fantastic amount of money which will help to make a real difference to people living with EB. I look forward to seeing what the next event has in store!”
Adrian Marshall, founder of Excelian, added “Excelian have set a target of raising £25,000 this year for DEBRA. This fantastic event is the latest in a series of planned events in 2016 for DEBRA and the amount brings the current total to just over £12,000, so we are well on track to hit our target. Excelian are proud to support DEBRA and the fantastic work they do to support those with this terrible condition”.
