On Tuesday 28th June over 100 supporters from Bank of Ireland, Clifford Chance and Excelian Luxoft, made their way to Docklands Sailing & Watersports Centre (DSWC) for a fun evening of dragon boat racing, all in aid of raising money for DEBRA.
DEBRA provides support for individuals with Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB), a genetic skin condition that causes the skin to blister and tear at the slightest touch. The charity focuses on funding research towards the effective treatments and ultimately, a cure for EB, and supports those living with the condition by providing emotional and practical support.
The evening was a great success - raising over £5250 for DEBRA and an additional £2250 for DSWC, a local charity that gives local children and adults who may be vulnerable or low of income the chance to experience Watersports.
Dragon boat racing is a historic Chinese tradition where boats of ten paddlers plus a drummer at the front of the boat, and a helm steering at the rear, battle it out head to head over a 250-meter course.
After two qualifying races for each of the eight teams, the fastest 6 boats fought it out head-to-head in the final. It was an extremely close fought race with the Excelian Luxoft boat, Boaty McBoatFace, pulling away in the final couple of meters to win in a fine display of strength, team work and determination. BBQ, drinks, cheesy disco and the presentation of the inaugural ‘Excelian Corporate Cup’ put the finishing touches on a great Tuesday evening down by the water! Watch the highlights here
Hugh Thompson, Director of Fundraising at DEBRA, who was also taking part, commented, “On behalf of everyone at DEBRA, I would like to thank everyone who took part with such enthusiasm! As a charity we are reliant upon the support of the general public to fund our work and to see fundraising being conducted in such a fun yet competitive way was fantastic. It is a great corporate challenge and one that we hope will grow and grow.”
Event organiser and founder of Excelian, Adrian Marshall, added “This is the second year we have run the event and were delighted that teams from Clifford Chane and Bank of Ireland were able to join us this year. It was a fantastic event and we hope that even more teams will take part next year to support DEBRA and the fantastic work they do to support those with this terrible condition”.
