He will demonstrate how Mutation Testing works and why it is effective in evaluating the quality of the code. Being a Software Architect and a Developer with more than 12 years of consulting experience, Nicolas Fränkel specializes in Java and JavaEE technologies, working for a number of customers from different industries (including Telecom, Banking, Insurance, Retail and Public sector). He is particularly interested in Software Quality, Build Processes and Rich Internet Applications. Besides working for a leading E-commerce solution vendor, Nicolas also writes books, teaches at universities, and conducts trainings for experienced professionals. He loves to share the knowledge through his blog ‘A Java geek’ as well as on Twitter @nicolas_frankel.

Luxoft’s Technology Webinar Series (LTS) marking its 10th webinar, offers IT Professionals around the world the opportunity to share their experience via a global IT Knowledge Platform. LTS is a next generation educational initiative fostering open source, best in class expertise sharing. Professionals can register at www.luxoft.com or view the webinar via Luxoft’s YouTube channel.

Mutation Testing tries to go beyond code coverage metrics to restore one’s faith in tests. It creates random code changes (‘mutants’) – deviations from the original code – and includes them in the test. If the test with a ‘mutated’ code fails, then it can be considered effective. On the other hand, if it succeeds (even with the ‘mutants’ inside the code), it is safe to say that this test is irrelevant.

As a part of the presentation, Nicolas will do a demonstration of PIT, a Java production-grade framework that enables Mutation Testing on a simple code base. If time permits, the presenter will also show how PIT can be integrated with Sonar.
